Lake Katherine is named for Katherine Chaves Page Kavanaugh. It
is said that Katherine was horseback riding with J. Robert Oppenheimer
when the two discovered the lake in the 1920's. Katherine was the
daughter of Amado Chaves, a prominent early New Mexico
politician. Mr. Chaves leased property from the National Forest
Service about 1910 and built a summer home. Eventually, that
summer home became the Los Pinos Guest Ranch located adjacent to and
just north of Mountain View Ranch.
Lake Katherine is located in a natural cirque just below Santa Fe Baldy. The trail from Winsor Canyon approaches the blue green lake from the east slope. The lake is about one-third mile across and is in a remarkably beautiful setting surrounded by towering thousand foot walls, except around the eastern entrance. At an altitude of 11,700 feet, spruce trees grow very thinly, but alpine flowers of all kinds grow profusely among the boulders. Lake Katherine is kept stocked with trout. The summit of Santa Fe Baldy (12,622 feet) can easily be reached from the lake. |
